When people talk about drug rehab, I often think of one of my friends. His name is Tom (not his real name). When we were in high school, I was always jealous of his good grades and good looks. He always gets all the girls and at the same time, did well in his studies. But few years ago, I didn’t expect to bump into him at the roadside. He looked haggard and begging for change and food. I treated him lunch and asked how he ended up becoming like this. He told me he took the wrong step by taking drugs and became an addict. His family chased him out of the house, his grades plummeted and his girlfriend dumped him. Basically, he lost everything because of that habit. He said he wanted to change, but he just can’t do it by himself. Feeling sorry for him, I decided to do something.
Later that day, I took him to a drug treatment centre in Michigan called Stone Hawk. I asked him to promise me one thing- that he will try his very best to change to the person he used to be. After undergoing rehab treatment in Stone Hawk, he became better. He felt so much love and support while he was there. It really helped him change a lot.
That was many years ago. Today, Tom is 100% cured of his addiction to drugs and now happily married with 2 kids but he decided to stay back and help other addicts in Stone Hawk. He knew he did a mistake once but was lucky enough to be given a second chance to lead a normal life again, so he wanted to help other addicts and give them a second chance too. We both know it’s never too late to change.
